Crowe was taking a look at actresses like Bridget Fonda and Marisa Tomei when they appeared on Zellweger's The Whole Wide World (1996). He auditioned Zellweger, and felt certain he had found his Dorothy Boyd. Renee continued her success with a few small independent films and after receiving further critical praise, she felt confident enough to return to the realm of large-budget Hollywood films.
